There are two items in this folder. The first, 'Unity DS-1 FreeMIDI Names', is used to generate a FreeMIDI names document. The second, 'Unity DS-1 FreeMIDI Driver', is an alternate FreeMIDI driver that supports multiple devices.
FreeMIDI Names
If the Unity DS-1 control panel switch 'Publish FreeMIDI Names' is unchecked, you will need to provide a FreeMIDI names document so that applications like Digital Performer can display the Unity DS-1 bank and program names correctly. The 'Unity DS-1 FreeMIDI Names' utility automatically generates this document and installs it in the proper location System Folder:FreeMIDI Folder:Default Names:BitHeadz.
If the control panel switch 'Publish FreeMIDI Names' is checked, you will not need to generate a names document. The names will be automatically generated every time the Unity DS-1 engine is used by FreeMIDI. If you notice that it takes a long time for Performer to start up, you might want to try unchecking the control panel switch and using the 'Unity DS-1 FreeMIDI Names' utility.
FreeMIDI Drivers
Two FreeMIDI drivers are provided with this release of the Unity DS-1. The version installed in the 'FreeMIDI Folder' in your system folder supports one device only (that is, 16 MIDI channels), but the bank and program names are recognized correctly by FreeMIDI.
The version of the driver in this folder supports multiple devices as selected in the 'Unity DS-1' control panel, but does not publish the names correctly with the most currently released version of FreeMIDI, version 1.4.4. MOTU says that future versions of FreeMIDI will support getting the names correctly for the multiple device version of the driver. Check with BitHeadz to get the latest info about which version of FreeMIDI you should be using.
If you do not need multiple device support (that is, more than 16 MIDI channels), you do not need to use the FreeMIDI driver in this folder.
